Art is everywhere! Exploring art through design

In Arts, the students of 1st and 2nd ESO have developed an exciting project that has allowed them to delve into the History of Art and, at the same time, apply their knowledge of graphic design and composition.

The challenge consisted of creating informative posters about different artistic periods and plastic techniques. To do so, the students organised themselves into teams and chose an artistic movement (such as Renaissance, Baroque, Impressionism or Cubism) or a specific technique (watercolour, oil painting, collage, among others). From this choice, they began a research phase in which they gathered information on the most representative artists, the visual characteristics of each style and the tools used in each technique.

Once the research phase ended, it was time for creativity. The students designed their posters by applying principles of visual composition, typography and colour combination to achieve an attractive and harmonious result. To do so, they made preliminary sketches and used both manual and digital tools, reinforcing their graphic design skills.

The result was a gallery of posters full of colour, information and creativity, which were displayed in the school corridors for the whole school community to enjoy and learn from.

 SIMPLY THE BEST, CALATALIFA HELPS!

This year, many of the projects our Section students are doing in all the subjects we teach in English revolve around a common topic we called: "Simply the Best, Calatalifa Helps!" 

The aim of this common theme is to make our students feel proud of themselves and our school when they help other students or people 💗.

CAMBRIDGE EXAMS FOR FIRST OF ESO AND BACHILLERATO

On November 17th our 1st of ESO and 1st of Bachillerato students started taking their external Cambridge exams. 

All of our 1st of ESO students in Section groups and some from Programme groups sat for the A2 and B1 levels. 

All the students in 1st of Bachillerato who had studied in our school or in a bilingual school last year took exams too. Most of the students coming from Section took and got the B2 level, and a few of them even got the C1 level. 

We would like to congratulate them, their teachers and families for their big effort😊

OTHER PROJECTS AND CHRISTMAS🎅🎄 ACTIVITIES

The term was full of projects and activities, like oral presentations of a wide variety of subjects such as debates, lives or books, research projects such as Water is Our Treasure, or Christmas activities, like the screening of Home Alone 2 in English at the cinema. We hope the new year is full of even more fun challenges and events!

                                                                                                        WORLD BOOK DAY

This year, among many other activities, our youngest students wrote these original Book Reports with the books they had read for the 3rd term. Then we displayed them in our entrance hall.

Many students prepared an oral presentation of their books too, which encouraged other classmates to read another book.

WE HAVE THE WINNERS FOR THE FIRST ENGLISH LITERARY CONTEST!

 

 

On April 22nd we celebrated International Earth Day. The subjects of Geography and History and Arts, Crafts and Audiovisual Media proposed an interdisciplinary project to raise awareness on the importance of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals for the future of our planet, as approved by United Nations in the 2030 Agenda.

 The students were split into teams and carried out projects on each of the Sustainable Development Goals, covering topics such as green energy, waste generation or endangered wildlife habitats.

These are some of the resulting works, that include information on each topic and a poster created using the collage technique:

Emoji design contest

This time of the year in 1st ESO, we are discovering the world of audiovisual communication. And one of the most engaging activities to learn how to express different emotions by using images is the creation of custom emoji sets. To encourage the students, the exercise is proposed as a contest, where the winners receive their emojis digitalized as a prize. The best works are displayed, so all the students get inspiration from their classmates' creativity.

First, I show them the classic version and ask them to choose 10 different emotions:

Then, I ask them to think of an original concept for the set. All the emojis must be coherent with that idea. And finally, they find a name for the set. Below are some of my favourite emoji sets from this year:

Finally, for the prize, I digitalized and slightly improved the original designs. That way, the winners can use their emojis as a stickers and in their social media. This is the result:

Yōkai design

Meanwhile, in 1st ESO students have discovered the amazing world of the Yōkai.

Yōkai are sneaky fantastic creatures from Japanese lore that are said to live amongst humans. Some yōkai are dangerous and lethal, while others just like to joke and prank people and have a cute appearance. Here you can see some examples from antique prints and ink drawings:

 

 There are hundreds of these creatures out there, and they are so popular in Japan they have even inspired TV series, videogames and films, like Pokémon or Yō-kai Watch.

This Halloween students had to design their very own yōkai and write about its habitat, diet and behaviour. Works came out really extraordinarily, the creativity of these students is beyond limit!
