CREATING ....A SCHOOL CATAPULT!!

 Our students from 3° C, D, and E worked on the project School Catapult. The goal of this project was to build a catapult that could launch an object a minimum distance of 20 cm using only simple supplies. 

To reach this goal students implemented the stages they learned in the Project Approach: Analyze, Design, Build, and Evaluate. 

Through this process our students learned both important organizational skills, as well as the emotional skills needed to work together to accomplish a shared goal.

IMMERSION CAMP EXPERIENCE IN OLMEDO

This amazing year is coming to an end. Effort and stress are about to finish. Memories will stay forever. Thank you, 2ESO students, for this great experience we lived together in Olmedo. I hope you enjoyed as much as your teachers did; it was great to see you as medieval soldiers, corageous climbers, shelter makers, kick-boxing fighters, professional dancers and , in a word, kind people!!!!!. Looking forward to going back next year!!!

CELEBRATING WORLD BOOK DAY

This April, IES Calatalifa celebrated its fourth annual  Literary Contest! Students were invited to write a short story or poem in English for the chance to win a prize!

We received a wide variety of poetry and short stories of all genres.
Once the winners were selected, the English department hosted an awards ceremony to celebrate all the participants and announce the winners.  At the ceremony, our school's language assistants led an exciting presentation explaining the significance of creative writing and providing their best writing tips. It was quite an exciting day!

At IES Calatalifa we hope to inspire our students to find ways to unleash their creativity everyday. We thank all the participants and cannot wait to see what they submit for next year's contest

 

FAMILY STORIES

During the second term, our students from 3˚C and 3˚D worked on a project called Family Stories. The goal of this project was for the students to strengthen intergenerational connections by learning more about elderly members of their families. To do this, they interviewed their family members, created family trees, and designed posters with the most significant events that occurred during their loved one’s lifetime.

This project was an opportunity for the students to connect in a new way with their grandparents, aunts, uncles and parents by giving their family members space to share their wonderful memories with the younger generation. Hopefully, this connection helped them value the priceless stories and insights of their loved ones. In order to capture those memories, they were asked to conduct an oral history interview using the voice recording tool on their phones.

Through this process, our young students have learned important social and emotional skills including patience, listening and active citizenship, as well as gaining a sense of their roots and identity. In addition, they have enhanced other skills, such as translation and writing abilities, along the way.

WHY DESIGN SCIENTIFIC POSTERS?

Posters are widely used in the academic community, and most conferences include poster presentations in their program.  Research posters summarize information or research concisely and attractively to help publicize it and generate discussion. 

The poster is usually a mixture of a brief text combined with tables, graphs, pictures, and other presentation formats. At a conference, the researcher stands by the poster display while other participants can come and view the presentation and interact with the author.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD POSTER?

• Important information should be readable from about 10 feet away
• Title is short and draws interest
• Word count of about 300 to 800 words
• Text is clear and to the point
• Use of bullets, numbering, and headlines make it easy to read
• Effective use of graphics, color and fonts
• Consistent and clean layout
• Includes acknowledgments, your name and institutional affiliation

WHY CRISPR ?

Just like humans, bacteria can get sick. Some bacteria have a defense system called CRISPR/Cas9 that protects them from viral infections. Over the last few years, scientists have adapted this bacterial defense system to be used in the laboratory to alter the DNA of various organisms. This article will explain how CRISPR/Cas9 is used to edit genes and will provide examples of how this technology is useful. Experiments using CRISPR/Cas9 must be carried out ethically, that is, scientists must ensure that all research respects human rights and animal welfare and complies with the law.
